Historical Significance of a Lineage Emblem 螳螂符号

What is a Emblem

A badge, device, image, figure, sign, token, design, logo or figure that identifies or represents something: the emblem of a school.

The lineage emblem of a martial art clan is more than just a symbol; it represents a rich history of tradition, honor, and discipline. These logos often incorporate elements that reflect the origins and philosophies of the martial art, serving as a visual reminder of the lineage’s heritage. For many clans, the logo is a sacred emblem that embodies the teachings and principles passed down through generations.

A lineage emblem distinguishes one martial art clan from another, serving as a badge of identity and pride. It symbolizes the unique techniques, values, and beliefs that define the clan’s martial art style. A lineage emblem is often a source of inspiration and motivation for students, reminding them of the legacy they are a part of and the standards they should uphold.

In many martial art traditions, altering a lineage logo is considered a dishonorable act. It is seen as a sign of disrespect to the ancestors and masters who developed and preserved the martial art over centuries. The emblem represents their sacrifices, dedication, and wisdom, and altering it would not carry the same depth of meaning or historical significance as the original, leading to a loss of authenticity and credibility.

A lineage emblem is a symbolic gesture that carries immense weight and significance, reflecting the history, identity, and values of the clan. By honoring and preserving the lineage logo, practitioners can pay homage to their ancestors, maintain the integrity of their martial art, and uphold the legacy for future generations.

The Praying Mantis image of the WHF lineage that was used in publications was designed by a disciple named 黃翔 Huang Xiang, who is mentioned as the proofreader in the opening text for the Small Scale Boxing Set manual and the Plum Blossom Hands Boxing Set manual, “text proofread by Huang Xiang”.

This Mantis emblem can be dated back at least to the first published books in the 1950’s, but it is also seen in a 1945 group photo. Although it is not the same as the image used on the uniforms for the Honfan Fitness Academy it is the most commonly used image to represent the lineage, either within a circle or within the shield of the Jingwu.

This was the emblem used by my Sifu, Philipman Chow and what we still use today.
